We are proud to support this cherished local tradition and spread joy throughout the Summerland community this festive season. Join us in the heartwarming essence of small-town living as we unite to celebrate the captivating magic of this event! The Festival of Lights, initiated 37 years ago by four Summerland businessmen—Jerry Hallquist, Art Sewell, Allan Fabbi, and Bruce Hallquist—under the Downtown Business Improvement Area, was created to highlight downtown Summerland businesses. Initially, the committee sold about 25,000 strings of Christmas lights to merchants for decoration, with the District of Summerland enhancing the ambiance by adorning street lights and public buildings. As the first festival of its kind in the Okanagan, it attracted 4,000 to 5,000 attendees in its inaugural year and has remained a beloved holiday event in Summerland and the entire Okanagan for 36 years.
